Academy of Art University NYFW Fall 2012

By Saturday, February 11, 2012

A number of talented graduates from the Academy of Art University debuted their Fall 2012 collections on the runways at Lincoln Center Friday February 10th. Being the only school to hold a show during New York Fashion Week, these graduate designers gain tremendous exposure from this opportunity. So without a doubt, all nine collections displayed professionalism and hard work, as well as creativity derived from each inspirations.

Here are some highlights: Staring the show with Wu Di's geometric patterns and heavy use of cashmere and wool, which then smoothly transitioned to Amy Bond's gray wool dress and more complex shapes and construction. To my surprise, my favorite was Donghyuk Kim's menswear collection (only menswear) that was heavily influenced by vintage military wear. His fur-lined coat was exceptional and I thought his garments were beautifully presented in shades of olive green and dark brown. Followed by Donghyuk, Jeanette Au gave the audience more oomph behind the texture and volume. She was also one of the few who experienced with colors in her collection.

Overall, the show was enjoyable and I have a good feeling this is just the beginning for these graduates, soon-to-be emerging designers.
